Most of the surgical instruments are made from
stainless steel. Titanium, chromium, radium and molybdenum are some of the
other metals that are used in the making of surgical instruments. With the help
of these surgical instruments, variety of procedures and operations become
possible.
Due to technological advancements, surgical
instruments today have electronic or computerized components. In Pakistan,

industry started when the surgical instruments used by British people was repaired
by the skilled workers of Sialkot. This laid the foundation for this industry
in the subcontinent.
Around the world, trade for medical and surgical
items has readily increased as it makes about 30 billion dollar. In comparison
to the world, Pakistan fetches a very small trade share, however, the local
industry comprises of specialized skills and expert workers. These workers make
use of their century old experience in producing these sophisticated items.
Surgical instruments manufactured in Pakistan are
exported to France, Germany, America, Belgium, etc. All these countries are
bracketed as high income markets. Surgical exports of Pakistan are higher than
the surgical exports of China in the past years. Most of the surgical
instrument industries in Pakistan are situated in Sialkot. This city is very
well known by the European states due to their surgical goods.
Pakistan has a history of producing basic disposable
surgical instruments. However, one of the biggest disadvantages of this
industry is slow growth. Growth in this industry is very slow in comparison to
other industries. Main reason for this slow growth of Pakistani Surgical Instruments Exporters is lack of funds and government support.
Surgical instrument industry in the world and in
Pakistan is also driven by technology. There is a demand of devises and
apparatus components using computer aided electronics that are fetching higher
per unit prices in the world. Therefore, global leading manufacturers of
surgical instruments have shifted their emphasis on high value added products.
However, there is no competitor of Pakistan in terms of basic components.
