Pakistan enjoys specialized skills in the sector of surgical instruments. Surgical instrument products made in Pakistan are exported to high income markets, such as, America, Germany and France. Last estimated surgical instrument export of Pakistan is about $260.60 million in the year 2011. Surgical instruments are the tools or devices that perform the functions of surgery, such as, cutting, dissecting, holding, grasping, retracting or suturing.


Most of the surgical instruments are made from stainless steel. Titanium, chromium, radium and molybdenum are some of the other metals that are used in the making of surgical instruments. With the help of these surgical instruments, variety of procedures and operations become possible.
Due to technological advancements, surgical instruments today have electronic or computerized components. In Pakistan, surgical industry started in the 19th century properly. This industry started when the surgical instruments used by British people was repaired by the skilled workers of Sialkot. This laid the foundation for this industry in the subcontinent.

Around the world, trade for medical and surgical items has readily increased as it makes about 30 billion dollar. In comparison to the world, Pakistan fetches a very small trade share, however, the local industry comprises of specialized skills and expert workers. These workers make use of their century old experience in producing these sophisticated items.

Surgical instruments manufactured in Pakistan are exported to France, Germany, America, Belgium, etc. All these countries are bracketed as high income markets. Surgical exports of Pakistan are higher than the surgical exports of China in the past years. Most of the surgical instrument industries in Pakistan are situated in Sialkot. This city is very well known by the European states due to their surgical goods.

Pakistan has a history of producing basic disposable surgical instruments. However, one of the biggest disadvantages of this industry is slow growth. Growth in this industry is very slow in comparison to other industries. Main reason for this slow growth of Pakistani Surgical Instruments Exporters is lack of funds and government support. 

Surgical instrument industry in the world and in Pakistan is also driven by technology. There is a demand of devises and apparatus components using computer aided electronics that are fetching higher per unit prices in the world. Therefore, global leading manufacturers of surgical instruments have shifted their emphasis on high value added products. However, there is no competitor of Pakistan in terms of basic components.
